Personal Learning Experience-Week 4 (Voice Thread)

I have to admit that with all the technology I have explored over the last couple of weeks, I have had my fair share of frustrations. I have been confused, lost, not sure what I was supposed to do exactly, but when it was all said and done I'm so glad I pressed on with the determination of learning about a variety of advanced technologies!

For my personal learning experience this week I want to share my voice thread, I have incorporated into my lesson plan. This voice thread is brief, as it discusses the criteria for student's Issue Debate Papers. It is broken into shorts segments explaining components of what each student's paper should address, why they choose a particular side to the issue, and explain why their assigned scenario is even an "issue".

I thought that by doing a voice thread, this will be effective for students to fully understand how I would like their papers. I also have provided a sample Issue Debate Paper for students to follow as a guideline as to what I'm looking for. I had this same experience (voice thread) as an undergraduate student which worked well for me and my fellow classmates, and wanted to provide the same opportunity for my current students to maximize their learning.

Personal Learning Experience- Week 2

Well...another week in the books, and I must say I have leaned an abundant amount of information so far. From Diigo, to Elluminate (thanks Roni) this week has been jam packed with online useful technology. I hope in the next few days to get some adequate feedback from my classmates on my lesson plan draft I plan to implement. I'm looking forward to some of the comments and/or suggestions that will help me make my lesson plan efficient, and provide my students an opportunity/means to grow more intellectually in the field of kinesiology & Sport. That’s all I have for now....looking forward to what lies ahead in week three!!

Lesson Plan Draft

Sample Lesson Plan

Course: Values in Kinesiology and Sport

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this lesson, the student should be able to demonstrate:

• A clear understanding of their personal philosophy of life, physical education, athletic training, other kinesiology disciplines’ and athletics.

• The ability to morally reason and act according to the standards, principles and values that are expected of the student in a professional setting.

• The ability to effectively analyze situations that call for ethic reasoning and consequently morally correct actions as they relate to sport.

Activity: Students’ response to Scenarios:
Every kinesiology undergraduate student should not only be aware of the moral issues that present themselves to our profession, but each student should be able to creatively solve those issues as they relate to one’s philosophical position. Therefore, critical issues that require moral reasoning in our discipline are being presented to all students as real life scenarios. Students will be required to give a written response to various moral positions papers written by former students. One scenario will be assigned to each student. The student is then responsible to examine the scenario and write a “blog” on that particular scenario. It may be a positional paper, or it may be a paper that explains both sides of the issue. But, the student must take a position on that scenario and give reasons for that position. This “blog” will be presented in a site for scenario blogs.
Once students read their assigned scenario, they are to take a position and defend it by at least 3 credible sources (Sports Illustrated and other pop lit magazines are not credible sources). Google Scholar, Sport Discus, and ERIC are reliable resources and are available through the Fresno pacific University library on line services.

Student’s “blogs” should reflect.......

A. An in-depth analysis of the issue

B. The current literature relating to the topic

C. And their analyzing conclusions to the issue as it relates to their personal philosophy.

Potential Technologies (used for this lesson):
1. Moodle- to post/create threaded discussion on students selected controversial scenario.
2. (EBSCOhost) Search Engines- Google Scholar, Sport Discus, and ERIC
3. Blogger.com

Professional Website

This is by far one of the most important elements when it comes to providing opportunities to become more employable. I found the set up to be simple, and enjoyable. Personally, my website as of now is just the tip of the ice burg. I intend to implement more information, as it pertains to my current/future position. Looking around at other individual websites, I was astonished of the professionalism that I saw. I'm looking forward to updating, along with receiving comments/suggestions of how I can make my personal website more appealing to a potential employer.

Professional Networking

With the advancement of technology, I can see why Plaxo and Linkedln can potentially be beneficial in various professions. It seems that the more contacts an individual has, the better opportunities one will create in terms of providing maximum opportunities for employment, networking in a specific field of interest, or receiving additional information to stay up-to-date with the latest news of whats happening in that profession. It also provides the opportunity for job seekers to see a resume of an individual, and their qualifications that can possibly land them an interview. A con when sharing all of this information, is a person might get carried away and provide information that is not needed. The more information an individual provides, means that other contacts will have to read/sort through all of the information provided, and may lose interest or key points only to be overwhelmed by meaningless or pointless information.

A personal website is a great way of others to see your accomplishments, goals, and other types of personal information that you have completed or in the process of working on. One con to having/creating a personal website is others viewing this vital information you provide to the public. Like Coach Wilkins stated in his blog, identity theft is becoming a major problem now days. One has to be careful and really analyse what he or she will be providing especially on a personal website.

Moreover, with all of the ways that technology is advancing, I can see more people using these types of innovated advancements being incorporated to promoting themselves on a more professional level.

LibraryThing

It's amazing how technology is advancing our world. I especially love LibraryThing not only for the fact that I can create my own personal library, but I can be on any computer to access it. This is such a valuable tool in that I have the opportunity to share interesting topics and information, to my colleagues, and find other people who have similar interests such as "coaching". LibraryThing will be very useful, as I can already see my personal library adding up with some of my favorite books. This is a tool I can see being widely used in any profession, or simply anyone who enjoys books.
