I have been confused, lost, not sure what I was supposed to do exactly, but when it was all said and done I'm so glad I pressed on with the determination of learning about a variety of advanced technologies!

For my personal learning experience this week I want to share my voice thread, I have incorporated into my lesson plan. This voice thread is brief, as it discusses the criteria for student's Issue Debate Papers. It is broken into shorts segments explaining components of what each student's paper should address, why they choose a particular side to the issue, and explain why their assigned scenario is even an "issue".

I thought that by doing a voice thread, this will be effective for students to fully understand how I would like their papers. I also have provided a sample Issue Debate Paper for students to follow as a guideline as to what I'm looking for. I had this same experience (voice thread) as an undergraduate student which worked well for me and my fellow classmates, and wanted to provide the same opportunity for my current students to maximize their learning.
From Diigo, to Elluminate (thanks Roni) this week has been jam packed with online useful technology. I hope in the next few days to get some adequate feedback from my classmates on my lesson plan draft I plan to implement. I'm looking forward to some of the comments and/or suggestions that will help me make my lesson plan efficient, and provide my students an opportunity/means to grow more intellectually in the field of kinesiology & Sport. That’s all I have for now....looking forward to what lies ahead in week three!!Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-64491587781956542122010-12-04T00:04:00.000-08:002010-12-04T00:04:36.501-08:00Lesson Plan Draft
Sample Lesson Plan

Course: Values in Kinesiology and Sport

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this lesson, the student should be able to demonstrate:

• A clear understanding of their personal philosophy of life, physical education, athletic training, other kinesiology disciplines’ and athletics.

• The ability to morally reason and act according to the standards, principles and values that are expected of the student in a professional setting.

• The ability to effectively analyze situations that call for ethic reasoning and consequently morally correct actions as they relate to sport.

Activity: Students’ response to Scenarios:
Every kinesiology undergraduate student should not only be aware of the moral issues that present themselves to our profession, but each student should be able to creatively solve those issues as they relate to one’s philosophical position. Therefore, critical issues that require moral reasoning in our discipline are being presented to all students as real life scenarios. Students will be required to give a written response to various moral positions papers written by former students. One scenario will be assigned to each student. The student is then responsible to examine the scenario and write a “blog” on that particular scenario. It may be a positional paper, or it may be a paper that explains both sides of the issue. But, the student must take a position on that scenario and give reasons for that position. This “blog” will be presented in a site for scenario blogs.
Once students read their assigned scenario, they are to take a position and defend it by at least 3 credible sources (Sports Illustrated and other pop lit magazines are not credible sources). Google Scholar, Sport Discus, and ERIC are reliable resources and are available through the Fresno pacific University library on line services.

Student’s “blogs” should reflect.......

A. An in-depth analysis of the issue

B. The current literature relating to the topic

C. And their analyzing conclusions to the issue as it relates to their personal philosophy.

Potential Technologies (used for this lesson):
1. Moodle- to post/create threaded discussion on students selected controversial scenario.
2. (EBSCOhost) Search Engines- Google Scholar, Sport Discus, and ERIC
Started Educ 210, and already I have learned about so many new technologies! This is very exciting for me, as I know they ALL will be beneficial not only for me (as an instructor), but for my current, and future students!

I'm looking forward to working with my assigned team members, via web. This will be a great experience, one I will and NEED to have in the future. WOW! four weeks to learn, expand, and grow more intellectually! Very optimistic of what the next three weeks will have in store for me!!Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-47179814989237362442010-03-03T22:09:00.000-08:002010-03-03T22:52:51.911-08:00Professional WebsiteThis is by far one of the most important elements when it comes to providing opportunities to become more employable. I found the set up to be simple, and enjoyable. Personally, my website as of now is just the tip of the ice burg. I intend to implement more information, as it pertains to my current/future position. Looking around at other individual websites, I was astonished of the professionalism that I saw. I'm looking forward to updating, along with receiving comments/suggestions of how I can make my personal website more appealing to a potential employer.

http://sites.google.com/site/michaelmendrinssite/Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-85324467174361983862010-02-17T12:45:00.000-08:002010-02-17T13:34:19.253-08:00Professional NetworkingWith the advancement of technology, I can see why Plaxo and Linkedln can potentially be beneficial in various professions. It seems that the more contacts an individual has, the better opportunities one will create in terms of providing maximum opportunities for employment, networking in a specific field of interest, or receiving additional information to stay up-to-date with the latest news of whats happening in that profession. It also provides the opportunity for job seekers to see a resume of an individual, and their qualifications that can possibly land them an interview. A con when sharing all of this information, is a person might get carried away and provide information that is not needed. The more information an individual provides, means that other contacts will have to read/sort through all of the information provided, and may lose interest or key points only to be overwhelmed by meaningless or pointless information.

A personal website is a great way of others to see your accomplishments, goals, and other types of personal information that you have completed or in the process of working on. One con to having/creating a personal website is others viewing this vital information you provide to the public. Like Coach Wilkins stated in his blog, identity theft is becoming a major problem now days. One has to be careful and really analyse what he or she will be providing especially on a personal website.

Moreover, with all of the ways that technology is advancing, I can see more people using these types of innovated advancements being incorporated to promoting themselves on a more professional level.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-17828589921793936092010-02-10T19:56:00.000-08:002010-02-10T21:04:59.765-08:00LibraryThingIt's amazing how technology is advancing our world. I especially love LibraryThing not only for the fact that I can create my own personal library, but I can be on any computer to access it. This is such a valuable tool in that I have the opportunity to share interesting topics and information, to my colleagues, and find other people who have similar interests such as "coaching". LibraryThing will be very useful, as I can already see my personal library adding up with some of my favorite books. This is a tool I can see being widely used in any profession, or simply anyone who enjoys books.

http://www.librarything.com/home/michaelmendrinMendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-44324125180161124972010-02-10T19:25:00.000-08:002010-02-10T21:02:37.552-08:00Image Generators

What a great tool to discover! I had a great time playing around with some very interesting images. I can see this type of creativity being used among all ages. I can also see younger grade levels having lots of fun with Image Generators. This would be a great tool to let kids create images, on subject matters that are being covered in their curriculum. Example: (Valentine's Day). Teachers can judge their students creativity on their selected image. This is a great tool for providing additional opportunities for students to get more involved in a specific area of study, or special holiday throughout the school year. As you can see in my image (Go Sunbirds Go), I had a great time using LetterJames images. I could have spent hours with this. This was a very fun site to explore.
Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-32491943718540281052010-02-05T22:27:00.000-08:002010-02-05T23:19:49.832-08:00Blog Post-You tubeYou Tube is by far one of my most favorite sites to visit. I can find so much information on this site. From pointless information (like my last You Tube Post) to more innovated information I can use to get the most potential out of my athletes. Like the video seen here.

In the coaching aspect, You Tube can be a valuable tool in demonstrating the importance to proper mechanics to prevent injuries, and a whole list of other problems that can destroy an athlete’s career prematurely. I provided this pitching video of Phillidephia Phillies pitcher “Cole Hamels” to teach my pitchers the basic "Three Laws of Pitching" to be more consistent at throwing strikes, repeating pitches, etc.

I can see You Tube as a future component in the school setting. Currently, I intern in the physical education department at a local junior college. In a few of the classes that I help out in, I see many students who need help with their form (ex: tennis serve, proper weight lifting form, etc) You Tube can provide an added visualization in helping students correct the techniques they are having problems with. With students having another means of seeing how a specific form or technique is performed by a professional other then the instructor, this will give them more of an added opportunity to succeed in the task that needs to be performed

Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-40029691118723565982010-02-05T21:45:00.000-08:002010-02-05T23:25:38.829-08:00TechnoratiTechnorati, is a tool that was very intriguing to me. What I found to be most interesting to me was when I typed in the key word "Health" in the blog posts. I discovered many blogs the are specifically pertaining to "Health", and many avenues that address different information. I can see how this will be beneficial, as an instructor at a junior college. I can potentially use Technorati, as a learning data base for my students. To give you an example, I would have students visit Technorati once a week and have them explore a topic relating to "Health". By having students discover interesting topics throughout the duration of the week, they will acquire a more in-depth understanding of the many ways they can stay healthy, and up to date with the latest information on living a healthy life style. In addition, I can also see myself visiting this site for the same purposes.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-48631762592749236942010-02-04T22:14:00.000-08:002010-02-04T22:45:01.309-08:00del.icio.usAfter checking out del.icio.us, it's pleasing to discover a site where I can view all of my favorite sites at one centralized source. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to show another individual a particular site, not remembering what it was called. del.icio.us will save me time, by allowing me to Bookmark that particular site of my interest.

If you have ever coach any sport, you know the amount of time you have to prepare for the next day. By having a site available such as del.icio.us, this will not only be a major time saver, but one can also discover tons of information on any given sport. Which in turn, can formulate ideas on practice plans, strategies, or training. What a great idea to create a centralized source to save Bookmarks on some of your most visited sites, along with some of your favorite books.

On the educational side, I can definitely see this type of technology being used by instructors. Colleagues can use this centralized source to share books/sites relevant to their field. I'm sure as more and more people discover del.icio.us they will see how much of an impact it can potentially have as it relates to their professionsMendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-50469683318797873952010-02-04T21:38:00.000-08:002010-02-04T22:04:41.169-08:00Podcast Search EnginesAfter exploring for a while the many topics that are available in the from of Podcasts, it's amazing how much I can learn while driving, working out, or just to simply here a good/interesting topic that I'm intrigued by. I scrolled down to sports and found (IStats). This is where the light bulb came on in my head. IStats is a fitness program where you can create a workout specifically for your own benefit. In my four years of playing college baseball, I especially wished my coaches had discovered this program while I was still playing. I can see this type of program being effective with accomplishing fitness goals, as well as physically preparing for the duration of the baseball season. So, to give you an example, in baseball there are nine positions in the field. With that being said, each position has it's own specific physical demands. Pitchers, for example need to have a strong trunk, and powerful legs in order to sustain endurance while pitching. As a coach, what I would do, is program a workout routine for pitchers that deals mainly with exercising the legs, and trunk (abs). The same would go for other positions and the demands for their position, and so on. Being in the best shape possible in any athletic sport will make the coaches job that much more easier, and thus, will provide other aspects of coaching such as technical, and tactical skills to be executed properly, knowing that the players will have the right training to perform such tasks.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-23888012303348269442010-01-28T12:12:00.000-08:002010-01-28T12:44:38.203-08:00Technologies incorporated in my future careerJust about to head into the forth week of this kinesiology graduate program and I have learned an abundance of innovating ways to communicate using the web. From RSS feeds to Web 2.0, there are so many directions explored thus far in this course, I can't wait to see what else lies ahead. With all of these types of technologies being introduced to me, I can really see a need to incorporate some in my future profession as an instructor, and coach at the community college level. I especially was intrigued by Google Docs. Like some other class mates posts, all one really needs is the Internet. I can see this type of technology being harbored by me, as well as the rest of my colleagues within the physical education department. This will promote a strong bond of trust, knowing that the rest of the staff will be reading, and commenting on documents that are vital to the development of the department, not to mention the collaboration of diligent effort. Another major contributor that I will also incorporate in my future profession is blogging. I feel that by having another means of communicating outside of the school setting is a great idea in terms of sharing imperative information, thoughts, and findings from articles that deal with physical education. Also, as a coach it's important to know how other athletics programs are doing around campus, as this is one important aspects stated in chapter 13 (Be an Active School Citizen)-Developing the Physical Education Curriculum.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-33911014929219880782010-01-28T00:42:00.000-08:002010-01-31T22:02:37.973-08:00RSS & News FeedsThe RSS Feeds video was extremely helpful for me. As soon as I had finished viewing this video, I created an account. I know this will come in handy for me especially with the allotted time that I have throughout the course of a day to keep informed. This well especially be beneficial as I like to stay up to par with what’s happening around the world, state, and especially in the realm of sports. In addition, I know have the opportunity to analyze various findings on kinesiology related topics that pertain to my profession.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-50458084091424424982010-01-27T01:06:00.000-08:002010-01-27T01:29:32.583-08:00Google DocsI can see this type of technology being widely used in the educational setting as well as the coaching setting. On the educational side you can have as many individuals look/review/ or comment on a certain document needing additional feedback. This is a great incentive to have with others who work at the same school site or within a school district. This will be another innovated way to work collaboratively with one another. On the coaching side, I can see coaches sharing important information with the rest of their coaching staff. This can also provide an opportunity for professional scouts to check up on potential draft picks in terms of batting average, ERA, wins, loses, the possibilities are endless. What a great idea. I can't wait to share this information to additional baseball coaches around the valley about Google Docs!Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-2775389845334073382010-01-22T17:55:00.001-08:002010-01-22T17:55:33.425-08:00Flickr: Photo

Flickr: Photo, originally uploaded by Michael 45.

This is a picture I took at Carmel Beach this past summer. After pondering for a while it was right in front on my nose. Baseball! This game has advanced so much throughout the years it's astounding to see how players can improve thanks to modern day technology. Take video analysis for example. Players now have the accessibility to view their swing, throwing motion, or fielding if they choose. This enables them to correct or sharpen their skills needed to be more consistent. Imagine if Ted Williams or Joe DiMaggio, had the option to analyze their swing. The results would have been profound!

Another area in which technology in baseball interests me is a term referred by ESPN "The K Zone". This is a type of instrument used by baseball commentators, as well as baseball analysis's to determine if a border line ball (thrown from the pitcher) was actually a strike. This type of technology is used so that the viewers at home can see for them self's how far up, down, away, or inside a pitch may or may not have been.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-86770750513488651462010-01-21T21:17:00.000-08:002010-01-21T21:29:08.364-08:003 Articles of InterestArticle #1 EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES CHANGING PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE DELIVERY MODELS
This article was very helpful to me in that in taught me how technologies are changing the way we as a community and library staff are/will use library services. In all the ways that social networking is benefiting the community, I feel it's especially imperative for librarians to foster these types of technological innovations. Having online resources 24/7 is not only beneficial, but also may enhance more critical analysis of a better means of gathering information. I definitely agree with Stephens when stating "library blogs can be building blocks for communicating news and information to users". As a future instructor at the community college, innovating advancements with library services will help aide in the development of student success.

Article #2 Editorial: Examining Social Software in Teacher Education
Interesting article by Ferdig. Social networking will always have pros and cons. Out of the four theoretical concepts that ferdig mentions "artifacts" seem to be an added incentive in student's cognitive development. Publication of artifacts allows students to revisit, reflect upon, and revise their artifacts, thus enriching the leaning experience (Bruner, 1996; Olsen, 1996). This is similar to what this graduate program is doing (kin 792A). To be frank, it's working wonders for me!

Article #3 NEOMILLENNIAL USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN STRATEGIES: UTILIZING SOCIAL NETWORKING MEDIA TO SUPPORT "ALWAYS ON" LEARNING STYLES
This article was very information packed. Living in today's world it is imperative that we as educators are up to par in terms of ingesting and are well-informed of the types of technology/devices that students are relaying on. Page 15 (Weblogs as a Communication Tool) Dr. Mark Stock, Superintendent of the Wawasee School District, is a prime example of how Weblogs are an excellent outreach to informing others. Furthermore, this is just one example of how neomillennial learning styles are moving into the educational setting of the "always on" approach.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-508936121283585900.post-11328490503840879112010-01-16T22:22:00.000-08:002010-01-17T22:48:20.466-08:00Are californians more physically active then the nation as a whole? After deciding to attain a higher education as a Kinesiology practitioner , I always wanted to know if we, Californians, are more physically active than the nation as a whole? It's no surprise that many people flock to California for it's consistent weather. However, does this initiate the opportunity to be more physically active?

To find out the latest up to date information regarding this question I encourage you to visit www.cdc.gov/brfss/; interactive databases, then state prevalence data for determining prevalence of physical activity patterns in the state of CA, grouped by age, gender, and race. Compare rates in CA to the rest of the country, and see for yourself.

I thought this website can be a useful tool in helping kinesiology practitioners with latest statistics of health information.

Feel free to add your own comments.Mendrinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04654361537051375713noreply@blogger.com1
